Early Years

She was born Gloria Lee Sickal in 1942 in Michigan, a daughter of Pastor Lee Sickal and Dorothy Sickal.

She spent most of her childhood and high school career in the Battle Creek area of Michigan, working a brief time for the Kellogg Company.

When Sickal graduated from high school, she attended Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. There, she triple majored in English, French, and Sociology.

Upon her graduation, she took a job at Alexandria Monroe High School as a French teacher.

There, she met Bill Gaither, who was teaching English at the time.

She married Gaither in 1962, and they began writing songs recreationally.

Bill and Gloria began writing songs in the 1960s, and many those songs (including "Because He Lives", "I Am Loved", "Something Beautiful") would go on to become church hymn book standards across North America and around the world.

By the end of the 1960s, Gloria, Bill, and Bill's brother Danny Gaither were touring steadily as the Bill Gaither Trio, singing and recording songs Bill and Gloria had written.

After touring with the Bill Gaither Trio for nearly twenty years, Gaither drew her focus to the Gaither Homecoming series. She has been an active presence in every video production.

In 1991, she attended Ball State University and received a Master of Arts in British and American Literature.

She taught as an adjunct professor at Anderson University in 1987–88 and 1996–97.[citation needed]

In 1996, she spearheaded the creation of Gaither Family Resources[1] in Alexandria, Indiana, and currently serves as co-owner and managing director.

In 2002, Gaither launched Homecoming: The Magazine,[2] and she currently acts as writer, interviewer, and contributing editor.

In 2000, Bill and Gloria were named Christian Songwriters of the Century by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), an award based on the songwriters who have had the most songs recorded over the past 100 years.

Gloria is the recipient of seven honorary doctorate degrees, and she is the author of more than 40 books including 20 children's books.

William J. "Bill" Gaither (born March 28, 1936) is an American singer and songwriter of southern gospel and Contemporary Christian music

Besides having written numerous popular Christian songs with his wife, Gloria, he is also known for performing as part of the Bill Gaither Trio, and the Gaither Vocal Band

In the 1990s, his career (as well as the careers of other southern gospel artists) gained a resurgence as the popularity of the Gaither Homecoming series grew.

Early life

Bill Gaither was born in Alexandria, Indiana in 1936, to George and Lela Gaither.

He formed his first group, the Bill Gaither Trio (consisting of Bill, his sister Mary Ann and brother Danny Gaither), in 1956 while a college student at Anderson College.

After graduating from Anderson in 1959, he worked as an English teacher.

He married the former Gloria Sickal in 1962.

After a few years of trying to manage both a music career and his full-time teaching job, he quit his teaching job in 1967 and worked full-time in the Christian music industry.

"He Touched Me", which he recorded in 1964, was his breakthrough song.[1]

Gaither was influenced by southern gospel singers like Jake Hess and Hovie Lister and by groups like the Speers, the Statesmen and the Happy Goodmans.

Songwriter

Gaither and his wife, Gloria, have written many songs including: "The Longer I Serve Him," "Because He Lives," "The King Is Coming," "Sinner Saved By Grace", "Something Beautiful," "He Touched Me", "It Is Finished," "Jesus, There's Something About That Name" "I'm Gonna Sing", and "Let's Just Praise The Lord."

His songs have been performed by Christian artists (David Crowder Band, Carman, Sandi Patty, The Cathedral Quartet, The Speers and the Heritage Singers), country singers (The Statler Brothers) and pop artists (Elvis Presley).

Gloria Gaither often writes the lyrics while Bill writes the music, although composing is usually a collaborative project between the two.

As of 2005, they had composed 600 songs and by 2012 that number had increased to over 700.[2][3]

Performer

Since Gaither first began singing with the Bill Gaither Trio in the 1950s, he has constantly been performing.

The Bill Gaither Trio originally consisted of Bill, his brother Danny Gaither and his sister Mary Ann Gaither.

In about 1964 Bill's wife, Gloria, took the place of Mary Ann.

The trio sang traditional gospel songs along with original compositions by the Gaithers that gave them a more contemporary feel.

Gaither has a high bass voice (or low baritone), and would often sing while playing piano with the Bill Gaither Trio.

Entrepreneurship and Influence

Gaither founded the Gaither Music Company, which includes the functions of record company, concert booking (Gaither Management Group), television production, copyright management (Gaither Copyright Management), retail store, recording studio (Gaither Studios, formerly Pinebrook Studios) and telemarketing for the Gaither organization reside.

Gaither also runs a retail center called Gaither Family Resources.

Included as part of the company is Live Bait Productions, which is an animation company run by Benjy Gaither, Bill's son.[4]

Record Labels

In the 1980s, Gaither was involved with Paragon Associates, which formed a partnership with Zondervan to buy Benson Records, which is now part of Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

In 1994, Gaither and entrepreneur Leland Boren founded the Brentwood, Tennessee-based Chapel Hill Music Group, which later changed its name to Spring Hill Music Group.[5]

It was created as part of the Gaither Music Company to handle in-house productions, including the Gaither Homecoming series.

Industry Influence

David Phelps, Gordon Mote, Bill Gaither (left to right) in April 2009
Gaither has been a father figure to many younger performers in the Contemporary Christian music industry, while helping to prolong the careers of those who came before him.

Mark Lowry, Michael W. Smith, Carman, Sandi Patty, Steve Green, Don Francisco, Amy Grant, Michael English, Jonathan Pierce, Karla Worley, and Cynthia Clawson are all CCM artists who either got their start or became popular while touring with the Gaithers.

He has maintained the Gaither Vocal Band with a variety of singers through the years, including Gary McSpadden, Steve Green, Lee Young, Jon Mohr, Larnelle Harris, Michael English, Lemuel Miller, Jim Murray, Mark Lowry, Terry Franklin, Buddy Mullins, Jonathan Pierce, Guy Penrod, David Phelps, Russ Taff, Marshall Hall and Wes Hampton. Guy Penrod and Mark Lowry were the members of the Gaither Vocal Band with the longest tenure besides Bill Gaither himself.

Guy Penrod was with the group from 1995–2008 and Mark Lowry from 1988-2001.

It was announced in January 2009 that Mark Lowry, Michael English and David Phelps were rejoining the group; at the same time the announcement was made that Guy Penrod and Marshall Hall were leaving in order to pursue a solo career.

Gaither's Homecoming tours, which started in 1991, brought together major stars of the southern gospel and CCM industry, sparking a revival of the genres.

The tours have sold more than 1.1 million tickets across the world, and have included such notable venues as the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Pollstar listed the tour as selling more tickets in 2004 than Elton John, Fleetwood Mac or Rod Stewart.[6]

Lynda Randle, The Isaacs, Russ Taff, the Hoppers, Jessy Dixon and many more have performed on the tours.

Personal life

Bill and Gloria still live in Alexandria, Indiana, and have three grown children, Suzanne, Amy and Benjamin.

Billy Joe "B.J." Thomas (born August 7, 1942) is an American popular singer.

He is particularly known for his hit songs of the 1960s and 1970s, which appeared on the pop, country, and Christian music charts.

His best-known recording is the Burt Bacharach/Hal David song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head".

Career

Thomas was raised in and around Houston, Texas, graduating from Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg.

Before his solo career, he sang in a church choir as a teenager, then joined the musical group The Triumphs.[1]

During his senior year he made friends with Roy Head of Roy Head and The Traits.

The Traits and the Triumphs held several Battle of the Bands events in the early 1960s.

In 1966, B.J. Thomas and The Triumphs released the album I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Pacemaker Records).

It featured a hit cover of the Hank Williams song "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry".

The single sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc.[2]

The follow-up single, "Mama", peaked at No. 22. In the same year, Thomas released a solo album of the same name on the Scepter Records label.

Thomas came back to achieve mainstream success again in 1968, first with "The Eyes of a New York Woman", then five months later with the much bigger "Hooked on a Feeling", which featured the sound of Reggie Young's electric sitar and was first released on the album On My Way (Scepter Records).

"Hooked on a Feeling" became Thomas's second million-selling record.[2]

A year later Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid featured Thomas performing the Bacharach/David song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head", which won the Academy Award for best original song that year and hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1970.

Sales of it also exceeded one million copies, with Thomas being awarded his third gold record.[2]

The song was also released on an album of the same name. Other hits of the 1970s were "Everybody's Out of Town", "I Just Can't Help Believing" (No. 9 in 1970, covered by Elvis Presley), "No Love at All", "Mighty Clouds of Joy", and "Rock and Roll Lullaby".

Thomas's earlier hits were with Scepter Records, his label for six years.

He left Scepter Records in 1972 and spent a short period, in 1973 and 1974, with Paramount Records, during which time he released two albums, Songs (1973) and Longhorns & Londonbridges (1974).

Thomas in December 2012
In 1975, Thomas released the album Reunion on ABC Records, which had absorbed the Paramount label; it contained "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" (the longest titled No. 1 hit ever on the Hot 100).

It was Thomas's first big hit since 1972 and secured him his fourth gold record.[2]

In 1976, Thomas released Home Where I Belong, produced by Chris Christian on Myrrh Records, the first of several gospel albums.

It was the first Christian album to go platinum, and Thomas became the biggest contemporary Christian artist of the period.[3]

On MCA Records, Thomas and Chris Christian recorded what would be his last Top 40 hit single, "Don't Worry Baby", on his last pop album, which also included the Adult Contemporary hit "Still the Lovin' Is Fun".

During the 1980s, his success on the pop charts began to wane, but many of his singles reached the upper regions on the country singles chart, including two 1983 chart toppers, "Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love" and "New Looks from an Old Lover" (see 1984 in music), as well as "Two Car Garage", which reached No. 3. In 1981, on his 39th birthday, Thomas became the 60th member of the Grand Ole Opry.[4]

Thomas scored another hit, recording "As Long As We Got Each Other", the theme to Growing Pains, with Jennifer Warnes.

A later version, used for the show's fourth season, was recorded with British singer Dusty Springfield.

Thomas first released this track on his 1985 album Throwing Rocks at the Moon (Columbia Records).

Thomas has also authored two books including the autobiography Home Where I Belong, and starred in the movies Jory and "Jake's Corner".

Several commercial jingles including Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Bell, have featured his singing voice and music.

On December 31, 2011, Thomas was the featured halftime performer at the 2011 Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas.

On April 2, 2013, Thomas released The Living Room Sessions, an album with acoustic arrangements of well known hits.

It features guest appearances with established and emerging vocalists accompanying Thomas on seven of twelve tracks.[5]

On December 3, 2013, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced that his 1969 single "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" would be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.[6]

Personal life

Thomas has been married to singer and songwriter[7] Gloria Richardson since December 1968.[8]

They have three daughters, Paige (born 1970), Nora (adopted from Korea in 1978), and Erin (born in 1979). They also have three granddaughters.[9]

Shortly after Thomas's career began, he became dependent on drugs and alcohol, which led to the marriage nearly ending and Thomas even coming close to death.

Gloria became a Christian in 1975, and less than a month later, so did B.J.; most press sources indicate that Thomas has been sober since their separation was reconciled in 1976.[8][10][11][12]

Gaither Vocal Band~ "The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference"

Uploaded on Dec 21, 2010

Guy Penrod leads David Phelps, Mark Lowry & Bill Gaither as the Gaither Vocal Band sing "The Old Rugged Cross Made the Difference", in memory of Rex Nelon - London 2001.

The Gaither Vocal Band is an American southern gospel vocal group, named after its founder and leader Bill Gaither.

As of February 2014, it consists of David Phelps, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb, Todd Suttles, and Bill Gaither.

Although the group started out recording contemporary Christian music in the 1980s, it became known for southern gospel after the popularity of the Gaither Homecoming videos.[1]

The lineup of the band changes often, with artists leaving to work on solo careers, and new ones coming to replace them.

Besides Bill Gaither, singers with the longest tenure in the band include Guy Penrod (1995–2008), Mark Lowry (1988–2001, 2009–13), Michael English (1985–94, 2009–13), David Phelps (1997-2005, 2009-present) and Wes Hampton (2005-present).

The band has released 29 albums (not including compilations), at least 19 of which have charted.

The band has also released 10 DVDs, which feature many other Christian artists as well.

The Gaither Vocal Band has been honored with 2 Grammys, and 17 Dove Awards.

History

Beginnings

The Gaither Vocal Band is named after gospel legend and leader, Bill Gaither.[2]

It was the successor-group of the Bill Gaither Trio.

By the 1980s, Bill Gaither, along with wife Gloria Gaither, were both very successful songwriters.[3] For example, their song, "He Touched Me" was covered by Elvis Presley, after which he even named his album He Touched Me.

Presley won a Grammy for the album.[4]

Bill Gaither felt that his trio had reached its peak in the mid-1980s, but his desire to make another gospel hit kept the trio going.[2]

The original Vocal Band (called the New Gaither Vocal Band) was formed spontaneously, backstage of a Gaither Trio concert.

It consisted of Bill Gaither and Gary McSpadden of the trio, along with two of the trio's backup singers, Steve Green and Lee Young.

The quartet sang "Your First Day in Heaven" on stage that night.[5]

Their debut album, the self-titled The New Gaither Vocal Band, debuted in 1981.

According to the liner notes of the CD compilation, The Best of the GVB, the term "Vocal Band" was used instead of "quartet" because it did not limit Gaither in terms of sound or number of group members.

According to Steve Green on the Gaither Vocal Band Reunion video, he came up with the name and convinced Gaither to use it because he, at the time, did not want to be associated with "quartet music".

The name did indeed allow for a wide variation in sound, ranging from contemporary, adult contemporary, inspirational, classic and southern gospel.

However, in terms of group members, the number was limited to four up until 2009.[citation needed]

Lee Young left the group in 1982, and Jon Mohr was hired as the new bass singer. They then recorded the album, Passin' The Faith Along.

Later, tenor Steve Green left and Larnelle Harris was hired.

This group cut the New Point Of View album before Mohr left.

Widespread popularity

Michael English was hired as the new lead singer, so McSpadden was moved down to baritone, and Gaither dropped to the lowest part (Gaither stated that it was not bass at the time as it was not a true bass part).[citation needed]

At this point the group dropped the "new" part of their name.

Although the previous album (New Point of View) had been more contemporary than its predecessors, the album with this version of the group (One X 1) took it even further.

After this album, Larnelle left and was replaced by Lemuel Miller.

The group did not record an album with Lemuel before he too left. He was replaced by Imperials alumnus, Jim Murray.

This line up cut one album (Wings) before Gary McSpadden left to start his solo career.

Mark Lowry was convinced to replace him. Along with a great voice, Lowry added comedy to the mix.

Their Gospel roots project Homecoming in 1991, caused most Southern Gospel fans to welcome the Vocal Band with open arms. Jim Murray left and was replaced by Terry Franklin.

The album Southern Classics was released in 1993 with the hit I Bowed On My Knees.

Later Michael English left.

He was replaced by Buddy Mullins. Mullins was only a temporary fill-in, but he was included on the album Testify.

Terry Franklin soon left and was replaced by yet another Imperials alumnus, Jonathan Pierce (formerly known as Jonathan Hildreth, his first and last name—then changed to his first and middle name).

Strengthened by the popularity of the Homecoming video series, the Vocal Band added Guy Penrod at lead.

After Pierce's departure, Gaither hired David Phelps at tenor.

After Lowry's departure, Imperials alumnus Russ Taff sang baritone for a couple of years. Marshall Hall was his replacement.

Wes Hampton succeeded Phelps in 2005.

The group has had two number one songs on the Singing News chart.

"Yes, I Know" held the top position from July to October 1997, as did "I Will Go On" in November 2006.

The group has routinely performs classic Southern Gospel songs including many written by Bill and Gloria Gaither like "He Touched Me", "I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary", and "Sinner Saved By Grace."

Reunion

In July 2008, the vocal band recorded a reunion DVD at the Gaither Studios—The Gaither Vocal Band Reunion, Volumes 1 and 2. Except for Jonathan Pierce, Terry Franklin, and Lemuel Miller, the rest of the former and present members appear and perform.

The two CDs debuted in the top two positions on Billboard’s Contemporary Christian Album chart, marking not only the Gaither Vocal Band's first No. 1 on the Christian Album chart, but also their first No. 1 debut on that chart as well. The DVDs of the same title debuted in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions on the Music Video charts as well.[6]

The quintet

In January 2009, Marshall Hall and Guy Penrod left. Gaither brought back some former members: Michael English as lead vocal, Mark Lowry as baritone and David Phelps as first tenor.

The first album by this five-member version was Reunited, released in September 2009.

It was also the first album of the vocal band ever to feature only songs written by Bill and Gloria Gaither. A live album called Better Day was released in January 2010.

In August 2010, they released the long-awaited album called Greatly Blessed, followed by I Am A Promise, a children's album, released in August 2011.

Their most recent album is Pure & Simple, released in September 2012.

In October 2013, it was announced that Mark Lowry and Michael English would be leaving the group to devote more time to their solo careers.[7]

English's departure was immediate whereas Lowry stayed on through the end of 2013. Their last album as members, Hymns, was released in March 2014[8][9] and was nominated for a Grammy Award the following December.[10]

After their departure, several guests filled-in until two new members could be found. In January 2014, it was announced that Adam Crabb (of The Crabb Family) would join the group as the fourth member and lead singer.[11]

Todd Suttles joined the group as the baritone singer one month later.[12]

Following their formation, the new quintet would go on to release a limited edition album, "The New Edition", which could only be purchased at concert performances.

In October 2014, the group released their first album together entitled "Sometimes it Takes a Mountain".[13]

Five months later, that album was followed by a two DVD live performance release and the release of their second album (a live performance album) "Happy Rhythm".[14]

Upon release, the DVD's debuted on top of Billboard's Music Video chart ("Sometimes it Takes a Mountain at #1 and Happy Rhythm at #2).[15]

Michael English~ "He Didn't Throw The Clay Away"

Uploaded on Oct 18, 2009
He Didn't Throw The Clay Away by Michael English

Michael English (born April 12, 1962) is an American Christian singer. Initially, he was a member of his family's singing group, and is currently a member of The Gaither Vocal Band.

During his solo career, he recorded eight studio albums. English's highest-charting solo single was "Your Love Amazes Me", which reached No. 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1996.

Biography

Early years

Born in Kenansville, North Carolina[1] English was raised by parents Aubine and Grace English, in a town called North East, near Wallace, North Carolina.[2]

English performed in his family's singing group, The Singing Samaritans, from 1972 until 1980.

After graduating from high school, he joined The Singing Americans, where he shortened his name to Mike English, later going back to Michael.

He left the group in 1982 and joined The Goodmans.[1]

At about the same time he married his first wife Lisa Bailey and they had a daughter Megan who was born in late 1984.

After that, he joined a regional group, The Gospel Couriers, for about six months until he rejoined The Singing Americans.

It was then that he had his first big success in southern gospel music with the live recording of what would become his signature song, "I Bowed On My Knees (And Cried Holy)".

Although one of the Goodmans had brought him the song to sing and record while he was still there with them, the Singing Americans felt the song had not gone as far as it could while he sang with the group.

This prompted English to record the track with the group, bringing the song its biggest success.

His last album with the Singing Americans, Black and White, was one of their most popular.

It featured a single English was fairly well known for called "Welcome To Heaven", but success of it was possibly stalled when he left the group in 1985 to join The Gaither Vocal Band as their new lead singer, replacing Gary McSpadden, who moved to singing baritone.

The change of groups introduced more people to the southern gospel genre.

After rising to fame as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, Bill Gaither encouraged English to pursue a solo career.

He signed his first solo recording contract with Warner Alliance in 1991 while continuing to sing lead in the Gaither Vocal Band.

His debut effort, Michael English, was well received, ultimately winning two Dove Awards in 1992 for Male Vocalist and New Artist.[3]

He left the Gaither Vocal Band in 1994.

English's Christian music career abruptly came to a halt on May 6, 1994, just one week after the 24th GMA Dove Awards where he received four Dove Awards, including Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.[1]

English had learned that Marabeth Jordan, with whom he had an affair, was pregnant with his child.

(Jordan sang with First Call, a group he had been on tour with.)[1]

Jordan was dismissed from First Call, and two weeks later, English says, she miscarried.

First Call and English had just completed a tour for unwed mothers, and each was married.

English was pressured by Warner Alliance to make a public apology, and he was eventually dropped by the label.

Warner removed all promotions, marketing, which halted sales of English's records,[1] and Christian radio stations pulled English's songs off the air.[1]

He also returned his Dove Awards to the Gospel Music Association.[1]

English and his wife Lisa, who were married for 11 years and had a daughter in common, divorced.
English stayed with Ashley and Wynonna Judd during his recovery period.

Though he would not totally abandon music, English would not perform gospel music for the three years following the scandal.

In 1994, English signed a record contract with Curb Records to produce mainstream pop music.[1]

A lot of the material English had previously recorded on his spiritual albums was now being re-released as pop music.

A duet with country music superstar and longtime friend, Wynonna Judd, titled "Healing" a song English had recorded for his album, "Hope" introduced English to a new audience when the song was featured in the 1994 movie, Silent Fall.

Comeback

In September 1996, English released a pop album, Freedom. The album’s first single, "Your Love Amazes Me" (a cover of country music singer John Berry's 1994 hit), peaked at number 10 on the adult contemporary chart, but could only hit number 105 on the main chart.

At both the 1996 and 1997 Dove Awards, his co-production for album projects by The Martins won Southern Gospel Album of the Year.[4]

He also produced albums he had already started for The Stamps Quartet, The Gaither Vocal Band, and performed as a background singer on several artists' Christian albums, as well as demo work.

In August 1996, southern gospel audiences re-accepted English after promoter/historian Charles Waller reunited English with Ed Hill, Rick Strickland, Dwayne Burke and Milton Smith as the Singing Americans, before an audience of over 4,000 gospel music fans at the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion.[1]

JD Sumner also invited English to appear with the Stamps at the National Quartet Convention, as well as the Grand Ole Opry.

Curb Records released Gospel, produced by English and featuring his own band with arrangements he had sung in his concerts over the past several years.

This album was co-produced by long-time friend Jay Demarcus of Rascal Flatts. Gary LeVox, the lead singer of Rascal Flatts, sang background vocals as well.

In March 1999, Bill Gaither invited English to appear at a recording of Gaither Homecoming.

Three videos were released from this taping, "Good News", "Harmony in the Heartland'", and "What a Time".

In March 2000. English recorded a new album, Heaven to Earth, which was released by Curb Records.

Premiering his album on Trinity Broadcasting Network’s Praise the Lord, English gave a powerful testimony of what God had brought him through and shared his story about his addiction to painkillers and subsequent treatment and rehab.

In 2009, English rejoined the Gaither Vocal Band—making it a quintet—singing lead.

On March 4, 2010, Michael English underwent surgery on the spinal column in his neck.

While he was recovering, Marshall Hall came back to fill in for two months, and Reggie Smith filled in for one month.

With an emotional concert return, English sang again with the vocal band on August 1, 2010.

English was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2011.[5]

In October 2013, it was announced that Michael English would be leaving the group to devote more time to his solo careers.

His departure was effective immediately.
